What is a lobe piercing?
A lobe piercing goes through the soft, fleshy bottom of the ear. It's the classic first piercing. Many people go on to add a second and third lobe piercing above the first, creating a stacked lobe look.
Does a lobe piercing hurt?
The least painful ear piercing for most people, around 1–2 out of 10 — a quick pinch. A third lobe may be a little more tender as it gets closer to the cartilage.
Lobe piercing healing time and aftercare
About 6–8 weeks according to the Association of Professional Piercers, though it can take longer to fully settle. Keep it clean with sterile saline and avoid changing earrings until it's healed.
Lobe piercing jewelry and size
Studs in 20g–18g (0.8–1.0 mm) are standard; small hoops and huggies can go in once healed. Lobes are the most versatile spot for jewelry — almost any earring works.
Typical starting gauge: 20g-18g (0.8-1.0 mm). Common jewelry: Studs, small hoops.
Who can get a lobe piercing?
Everyone. The size of your lobe decides how many piercings you can stack — larger lobes fit three comfortably.
What to pair it with
A lobe stack is the base of most curated ears. Add a helix for a minimal look, or a conch and tragus for something bolder. You can test combinations in the ear piercing planner and save the result to show your piercer.
